Tracy Lawrence has been sitting near the top of my “Must See” bucket list for a long, long time. I finally got my chance to take in a live show at the Renaissance Theater in Mansfield, OH on 1/16/16!
Going in, I had my list of songs that Tracy Lawrence just “had” to play, and for the most part, my expectations were met in that aspect!
Lawrence took the stage around the scheduled time of 8PM and started the show off with “Speed Of A Fool” from his 1996 album, Time Marches On. I found it a bit odd, being that the song was not one of his 45 singles released to radio over the past 25 years, but maybe it has a special meaning to him that I don’t know. Anyhow, right from the start, Tracy sounded exactly like he has on all of the albums I ate up throughout the 90’s and 2000’s!
Lawrence continued his set with some of his bigger hits like “Renegades, Rebels & Rogues” (a favorite of mine!) and “If The World Had A Front Porch.” The crowd was absolutely loving the set already and a few folks were even getting a bit rowdy! You don’t see that at a theater show all that often, at least in my experience!
After a few more classic Tracy Lawrence hits, we were treated to a few classic country covers. Lawrence had mentioned that the legendary Merle Haggard was one of his all time favorite artists, but who wouldn’t have guessed that?! “The Way I Am,” was followed up by a modern classic in George Strait’s “Troubadour.”
In perhaps the most humorous moment of the night, a man was calling out from Tracy to play “Alibis.” The thing is, he had already played the song! Tracy asked if the man had been in the restroom, which he claimed that he had. Of course, Tracy obliged the man and belted out a chorus for the guy who is clearly a massive fan. I’ve only seen something like that happen one other time in all of my concert going years! Good on Tracy!
Wrapping up the set, Tracy performed “If The Good Die Young,” “Time Marches On,” “Paint Me A Birmingham” (Which may have been the song to receive the biggest accompaniment from the Mansfield crowd), before closing the main set up with “Find Out Who Your Friends Are.”
This is where I KNEW Tracy would come out and slay us all with my all-time favorite Lawrence hit, in “Texas Tornado.” Well, unfortunately in my case, I was wrong. However, Tracy did return for an encore song in the beautiful “Stars Over Texas.”
Typically, I prefer when artists share stories about as many songs as possible when I’m attending a theater show. Tracy Lawrence didn’t dive into that aspect too much, but his incredible talent made up for it. I suppose I’ll just have to see him perform again for performance of “Texas Tornado”… Twist my arm. Ha!
