Have you ever experienced the phenomena in which you lose contact with an old friend and years later you happen to run into them in a Walmart or other random location? Assuming that this is someone that you want to see again, this is how it typically goes, in my experience: At first, you hug, exchange pleasantries, ask what they’ve been up to lately and then of course, recall some of your favorite memories together.
This is exactly the way it feels upon first listen of Lari White’s newest release, a double E.P. titled New Loves / Old Friends. Though she has released a handful of albums since, Lari’s last Top 10 single, “That’s How You Know (When You’re In Love)” hit country radio over 20 years ago in 1995.
The New Loves portion of the release features seven tracks of all new material. Lari White wrote or co-wrote on five of the seven new songs. Kicking off with “Who’s To Blame,” this new sound from the 90’s country star leans more towards the smokey jazz halls than honky-tonks. This should by no means scare existing fans of Lari’s country music away from this E.P., of course. In fact, the jazzy Americana sound featured within New Loves may showcase White’s vocal talents at a higher level than any material previously released.
Next, comes the Old Friends section of the release. Here, Lari revisits songs of her past, including the above mentioned “That’s How You Know,” “That’s My Baby,” “Now I Know” and “Lead Me Not.” White gives these classic tracks a new spin by stripping the majority of the production away, leaving her incredible vocals joined by musicianship from the likes of her husband, Chuck Cannon, Charlie Worsham, Lee Roy Parnell amongst others. Fellow 90’s country artists Suzy Bogguss and Delbert McClinton also lend their vocal talents on “Wishes” and “Lead Me Not,” respectively.
It’s truly great to hear new material from such a talented artist like Lari White. Lets hope that this is only just the beginning and that we continue to be graced with more and more over the coming years. New Loves / Old Friends will definitely be holding a spot in my CD rotation for sometime!
