Though not having a single on the country Top 40 charts since 1997’s “I Will If You Will,” country star John Berry has been a very busy man over the past two decades. Not one to change his beliefs or sound based on what’s popular, Berry continues to write and record his own brand of country and inspirational music. His latest project, What I Love The Most, follows in those very footsteps.
Funded through Kickstarter by fans, What I Love The Most, is John Berry’s ninth studio album. Though having personally donated towards the album myself, back when originally launched, I was actually surprised to find it in my mailbox this morning. I couldn’t wait to get into the house to pop it into the stereo!
If you are here reading this, it’s very likely that you are already familiar with John Berry’s previous work. Assuming you are a fan, I can tell you right now that you are going to love this album! Berry’s voice is just as amazing as every and the song choices fantastic. Berry co-wrote on five of the ten tracks.
If I were limited to picking only three standout tracks, I believe I would have to point out “Gotta Lotta Love,” “She Don’t Need Me” and “I Get That All The Time.” “Gotta Lotta Love,” is a fun look at a love starting from the very beginning, marriage, children and family. “She Don’t Need Me,” while at first listen, seems like the typical “my woman is better than me and I don’t know how I tricked her into loving me” song, but Berry’s take on this theme is so much more. John Berry’s soulful voice takes this theme from cliché to one of the most honest songs on the album. If any track from What I Love The Most would be the most likely to find success among today’s mainstream radio country, “I Get That All The Time,” would have to be it. It feels weird to say it, but this track almost feels like a cut that would be on Randy Houser’s How Country Feels.
It was so much fun to follow along with John Berry and his Kickstarter campaign as this project evolved from the beginning. John offered continuous updates with each step of the project. From picking songs and hiring musicians to recording and announcing the title of the album, it was like we were all a part of the process. Being that this was Berry’s second successful Kickstarter campaign, I wouldn’t be surprised to see another in the coming years. If the chance comes, jump on it! It’s a thrilling ride!
I’ve already listened through What I Love The Most four times since receiving it this morning. I even gave it the “does it sound good in my truck?” test, and you better believe it passed with flying colors! If you are already a John Berry fan, you must find a way to get ahold of What I Love The Most. I think this one is going to ride around in my truck stereo for quite awhile!
What I Love The Most is currently only available at John Berry’s live shows. Though Amazon and iTunes availability is unclear at the moment, we will be sure to update our readers when we have more information!
