In the first half of 2016, I’ve had the opportunity to see Tanya Tucker and Loretta Lynn perform live, each for the first time. I never would’ve imagined that I’d get to see two mega legends of country music in such a tight time period. This past Friday, however, my expectations were blown to a whole other level when I had the chance to take in a live performance from the one and only, Dolly Parton!
I’ve been to a handful of shows at the Hard Rock Rocksino in Northfield, OH over the last year, but I can’t recall a time that an artist received a standing ovation right from the start quite like Dolly received! Parton went straight into “Train, Train” and kept the packed crowd on their feet through the entire song. I could tell from the start that this would be a fairly high energy show as Dolly moved back and forth across the stage throughout the opener.
All of the major hits were included, along with “Coat Of Many Colors,” Why’d You Come In Here Lookin’ Like That” and “Jolene.” Parton also included a few new songs, such as “Pure And Simple,” the namesake of the tour and upcoming album release.
Dolly shared stories about the songs throughout her career, the influences from her family and up bringing and even a look into how she landed her trademark “look.” Also, big news for those of you who loved the TV movie, Coat Of Many Colors, from earlier this year: A follow-up, titled Christmas Of Many Colors will be coming later in 2016 with the full cast returning!
Dolly, along with her fantastic three piece backing band, performed just over two hours, with a 20 minute intermission. Closing out the show (after a wardrobe change,) Parton showcased three of her most popular hits, with “9 To 5,” “Islands In The Stream” and of course, “I Will Always Love You.”
The only downside, if any at all, with the live performances of country music legends such as Dolly or Loretta Lynn is that there are SO many songs that you’d love to see them perform, that it would be impossible to include them all. Parton’s set was incredibly strong, covering many different eras of her career. Would I have loved to see her perform her cheesy as all get out1992 single “Romeo”? Of course. However, just to see her perform “I Will Always Love You” one time, makes up for any possible missed song from the long spanning career she has held.
Easily being one of the most important music tours of 2016, I strongly urge you to not skip out if Dolly Parton is coming anywhere near your town. Being approximately the first time she had performed in the Cleveland, OH area in nearly 25 years, it’d certainly be heartbreaking to miss such an opportunity! Do yourself a favor and check out her tour schedule, now. Do NOT miss out!
Dolly Parton will release Pure And Simple , later in 2016. Also coming in September, The Complete Trio Collection, featuring Dolly’s recordings with Linda Ronstandt and Emmylou Harris, will be remastered and reissued including the 1987 and 1999 albums PLUS a third disc of songs that have never been released before! Until then, purchase Ultimate Dolly Parton, for an amazing collection of her classic hits.
