Diamond Rio Jam Packs The Renaissance Theatre In Mansfield, OH And Performs 25 Years Worth Of Classic Country Hits.
Last night, I was able to check off a huge name from my live country music bucket list! I found myself at the beautiful Renaissance Theatre in Mansfield, OH to see 90’s country group, Diamond Rio!
Marty Roe and company have been recording hit country songs for 25 years. I went into the show, somewhat worried that they wouldn’t be able to squeeze all of my favorite songs into a single set, but boy, was I surprised!
The show kicked off with two of their very biggest hits, “Unbelievable” and “Norma Jean Riley” from 1998 and 1992, respectively. The crowd was immediately singing along with each and every song that Diamond Rio performed.
My worries of certain songs being skipped over to fit the allotted time was eliminated very early. The band would perform 3 medleys throughout the evening, with the first including “Nowhere Bound,” “Night Is Fallin’ In My Heart,” “That’s What I Get For Lovin’ You,” “Imagine That,” “Sweet Summer,” “Wrinkles” and “Mirror, Mirror. While I think I speak for everyone in saying that I would’ve loved to hear the entire song for each title, it was nice to get just a snippet in leu of the song being omitted from the setlist completely.
The show would slow down a bit following the first medley with two classic Diamond Rio love songs. This is truly where the band shines. Point me towards a country music act that can harmonize like these guys can, still to this day after 25 years, and I’ll likely tell you that you are wrong. I’m stubborn like that.
Another medley was right around the corner with a few more 90’s classics in “You’re Gone,” “In A Week Or Two,” “Mama, Don’t Forget To Pray For Me,” “Walkin’ Away,” “Holdin’,” “Love A Little Stronger” and “It’s All In Your Head.” Of these compiled songs, I would’ve liked “Love A Little Stronger” to be performed outside of the medley, as it was my personal introduction to Diamond Rio in the mid 90’s. However, I was thrilled to get even a piece of it!
The final stretch of Diamond Rio’s set included a song from their 2015 album, I Made It, titled “I Can’t Think Of Anything But You,” “In God We Still Trust” from their 2009 gospel album, The Reason and their final #1 charting single (to date), “I Believe.” This was followed by the third medley of the evening, this time performing classic rock hits in a bluegrass style. Wow! “Layla,” “Walk This Way,” “Carry On My Wayward Son” and “Born To Be Wild” all received the Diamond Rio treatment.
The band announced that they would be meeting for photos and autographs after their set before wrapping up, so if you happen to be attending a future show, make sure you hang around! I unfortunately was not able to stay on this particular evening, though I truly wish I had! It was time to close out the show (I had assumed) with the biggest hit of the band’s career in “Meet In The Middle.” The crowd was on their feet in the balcony and EVERYONE was singing along! Not only is this possibly Diamond Rio’s best song, but easily one of the greatest songs of the 90’s country music era!
As the band left the stage, I had assumed that the show had to be over. Right? Wrong! I couldn’t imagine what could have possibly been left out, until the first notes of “Bubba Hyde” hit my ears, that is! How could I have forgotten about Bubba?! Finally, Diamond Rio wrapped up their incredible show with the 1997 #1 single, “That’s How Your Love Makes Me Feel.”
