I’ve mentioned a handful of times in our ongoing 505 Favorite Country Songs Of The 90’s Countdown series, that I miss the “bands” in country music. Today’s country music scene is littered with so many solo artists. Throughout the 90’s we had Shenandoah, Alabama, Lonestar, Little Texas, Restless Heart and so many others that fit exactly what I’m talking about.
Among them, one of my favorite bands of the 90’s and early 2000’s, Diamond Rio, always struck a very strong chord for me. From one of the greatest songs of the decade in “Meet In The Middle,” to humorous fare like “Bubba Hyde” and the beautiful love songs like “One More Day,” these six guys based out of Nashville, TN have never disappointed this listener.
Having previously released their their last record in 2009 (The Reason), I was thrilled that the six year wait was finally over! The Diamond Rio boys are back with eleven brand new tracks in the newly released album, I Made It. When an artist or band releases new music after an extended length of time, sometimes I get a bit nervous about what’s to come: Will they stick to their roots? Will they try to fit in with today’s trends? You never know!
Well, I am here to tell you that Diamond Rio have not disappointed with I Made It! Just as one could hope, you have your signature Diamond Rio love songs in “I’ll Wait For You,” “I Can’t Think Of Anything But You” and one of my favorite tracks on the album, the title cut, “I Made It.” On the upbeat side, we get “Crazy Life, “Lay Your Lovin’ On Me” and the opening track “I Love This Song,” which I admittedly didn’t love at first, but after repeated listens, it’s over the top goofiness is growing on me.
My favorite track on I Made It, is hands down, “Beckett’s Back Forty Acres,” about a successful farmer that may or may not be growing a certain crop that some might frown upon… Ha! In fact, it feels a lot like one of Brad Paisley’s more humorous songs. If you know how big of a Paisley fan I am, that is a solid compliment right there!
If you are a Diamond Rio fan, this is a no-brainer. For those who may be new to the group, get ahold of one of their Greatest Hits packages, immediately!
I Made It is currently available via Amazon digitally, and through Diamond Rio themselves for a physical CD copy. (Psst, the first 250 orders will be autographed!) Follow Diamond Rio on Twitter at: @DiamondRioBand and on Facebook, HERE.
